"A fast-paced, dynamic and demanding course with
a strong emphasis on skills and creativity.
Why choose this course?
The course aims to create and environment in which innovation,
invention and originality can be developed. There's a
'hands-on' approach to designing, pattern cutting and
construction.
The course has a unique partnership with the world famous
Fashion Museum in Bath where you will have special access
to an unrivalled collection of fashion.
You will be taught by departmental staff who have national
and international reputations as professional designers
and pattern cutters with many years fashion industry experience.
There is also an extensive range of visiting lecturers
and a lively programme of speakers from the industry.
About the Course
In your first year you will concentrate on four main areas:
• Introduction to Fashion History and
Context
(an introduction to the Fashion Museum and the Collections).
• Research, Fashion Design and Illustration
(Learning the practise of fashion drawing, working drawings
and fashion illustration by hand and the computer)
• Introductions to Flat pattern Cutting
and Construction
(giving a thorough underpinning of technical skills of
fashion).
• Tailoring
(a triple module introducing the history and
context
of tailoring, designing tailored fashion and tailoring
skills).
As you progress to Year 2 you will continue to develop
your unique approach to research, design and drawing skills
carry out research at the fashion museum, as well as being
introduced to : Draping and Modeling on the Stand, Couture
Sewing Skills, Digital Technology for Fashion and Portfolio
Presentation.
During this year you have the opportunity to engage in
a live industry project, enter competitions and undertake
work placements. Live industry projects have been set
by companies such as Jaeger, Nicole Farhi, Karen Millen
Whistles, Double O, and Griffin whilst work placements
have been undertaken at Ben De Lisi, Nicole Farhi, Alexander
McQueen, Karen Millen, Griffin, New Look, Ben De Lisi,
Betty Jackson, Whistles, Milena, Stella McCartney, Chloe,
Dewhirst, Ted Baker and the Fashion Museum.
In Year 3 you are encouraged to develop independently
and have the freedom for originality and creative output
utilising the skills acquired throughout the course as
well as Professional Practice, Final Studies Essay/Dissertation,
Pre Collection and Final Collection for you to generate
a unique and exclusive design concept from initial idea
through to final realisation and promotion in the form
of an portfolio."
