“Roehampton
University has been offering highly distinctive degree
programmes in the social and cultural study of sport and
leisure for over 25 years. The MA programme, which has
run for over 10 years, is designed to create critical
debate and enquiry into the contemporary and historical
relationship between sport and culture. Students may explore
areas of particular interest to them, through seminars,
tutorials and assessments, culminating in research dissertation
in an area of their own choice.
Key areas of study
In the first semester, the MA introduces and applies a
range of theories to long-standing and emerging issues
in sport, including globalisation, Marxism, feminism,
postmodernism and poststructuralism. In the second semester
there is a special focus on race, gender, social identity,
the body, the media and the cultural history of sport
and leisure.
Special features
Students can opt to undertake guided study in areas in
which staff have particular research expertise. In addition.
there are option to select modules from across the sport
masters suite of programmes.
The MRes enables students to focus on a specific research
area of interest through the completion of a 120-credit
research dissertation.
