The
following information was taken directly from BathSpa
University's printed prospectus.
"This
award is one of the few Master's programmes in the UK
in Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages
(TESOL) to include a teaching practice component.
The TESOL Master's is designed for people who wish to
teach in language schools; and in the private or state
sectors. It is suitable for experienced teachers, but
also those with little or no prior teaching experience.
Teachers who have the University of Cambridge DELTA (Diploma
in English Language Teaching to Adults) or the Trinity
College, London LCTL Dip. TESOL (Licentiate Diploma in
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) will
be exempt from the whole of semester 1. International
applicants who are non-native speakers of English should
have a minimum IELTS (International English Language Testing
System) score of 6.5 or equivalent.
Structure and content
You can gain a Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits),
Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) or Master's award in
TESOL. The Master's award requires you to have gained
90 credits linked to TESOL and then to have undertaken
Research and the Professional Part 1 & 2 and the Master's
Research Project.
Theory and Practice of TESOL 1
This module provides an introduction to the theory and
practice of TESOL and relates this to students ongoing
observations and experience of English language teaching
while on placement. The placement will run throughout
the semester and will include five hours of observed teaching
practice.
English Language for TESOL
This module focuses on developing students' language awareness,
analytical, critical and evaluative skills and ability
in English through the study of the description and analysis
of modern English. Topics covered include spoken and written
English; grammar and grammatical theory; phonology; lexis
linguistic variation and discourse analysis.
Theory and Practice of TESOL 2
This module continues the study of the theory and practice
of TESOL and incorporates a minimum of five hours of observed
teaching practice. It also includes options in English
for Specific Purposes: teaching Young Learners; teaching
Business English; or teaching English for Academic Purposes,
depending on the cohort."
